OUR REVIEW
THE NEIGHBOURHOOD
By Praça do Infante in the west of the city and a short walk from the seafront, this is the closest five-star hotel to Funchal's historic centre and a good pit-stop if you're arriving or departing by cruise ship. The hotel is a 30-minute transfer from the airport with free underground parking. The Sé cathedral, leafy Jardim de São Francisco and several museums are a stroll away, along with plenty of inviting bars and restaurants.
By plane: there are direct flights to Madeira from London and Manchester (4 hours). The hotel is a 30-minute drive from the airport. Free parking on-site. Book flights to Madeira.
THE LOOK AND FEEL
There's plenty to talk about in this wine-inspired design hotel with its close-up images of grapes, black pebble walls, pebble-shaped sofas and purple lighting in the loo. Be prepared for corridors as dark as the set for a Halloween thriller with the room numbers lit up on the floor.
THE FACILITIES
This is a boldly-designed hotel that grows on you, thanks to the super-helpful staff and high standard of service. A request for an ironing board and a plug adapter was fulfilled in minutes. Families are welcome but there are no dedicated facilities, and guests have free access to an external gym.
