By Praça do Infante in the west of the city and a short walk from the seafront, this is the closest five-star hotel to Funchal's historic centre and a good pit-stop if you're arriving or departing by cruise ship. There's plenty to talk about in this wine-inspired design hotel with its close-up images of grapes, black pebble walls, pebble-shaped sofas and purple lighting in the loo. Be prepared for corridors as dark as the set for a Halloween thriller with the room numbers lit up on the floor.

This is a boldly-designed hotel that grows on you, thanks to the super-helpful staff and high standard of service. A request for an ironing board and a plug adapter was fulfilled in minutes. Families are welcome but there are no dedicated facilities, and guests have free access to an external gym.

Most of the minimalist rooms and suites are on a curved façade with a view of the city and ocean beyond; some look onto an internal atrium. Each floor has a different colour scheme reflecting the viticultural seasons: green, purple, brown and grey.
