Imaginative use of photography was an early achievement of The Independent, and an enduring trademark. A combination of talented photojournalists, picture editors, designers and editors were able to capture arresting pictures and make the best use of them. This skill, surprisingly, had been neglected by newspapers at the time, and others soon tried to follow The Independent’s lead. Here photographers tell the stories behind the pictures, from war photography, through news stories and portraits to the more homely, and quirky, depictions of British life.
