After Hours

I don't go to clubs much any more, except for the Double Six Club at Bohemia, Apple Tree Yard, London SW1 (071-839 5757). They give you a menu of board games and you sit down and choose. You might start off with Kerplunk] or the Bay City Rollers Game from 1974, followed by Risk, and finish off with something frothy like the New Faces Game. You get all sorts there, not just club trendies.

The best pub in the world is The Moone High Cross Inn about 50 miles south of Dublin at the crossroads in Moone, Co Kildare, Eire (010 353 507 24112). It's like a small version of the pub in An American Werewolf in London - there's nothing else around it, and inside it's all church pews and school desks. It's run by this mad old woman who does food but most of the menu usually isn't available. The pint of Guinness is the best I've ever tasted.

The second best pub is The Phule Bar, Lerwick, Shetland. It's right on the seafront, so it's used by fishermen. It looks rough, people drink McEwan's or whisky - but everyone's very friendly, and the fiddles and guitar come out later.

My favourite restaurant is the Brasserie Du Marche aux Puces 349 Portobello Rd, London W10 (081-968 5828). It serves good food, French, but not fussy. They don't serve those tiny portions. And the vegetarian stuff is very good. It seems to have a rush around midnight, which I think is because of the Virgin and Rough Trade Records offices nearby. The decor is dark wood, and they have interesting photographic exhibitions. You can get out for less than pounds 50 for two, with wine, so long as you're not a bottle-a-head person. I am, I'm afraid. The best thing is that it's only 50 yards from my bedroom.'
