Art: Hg Ponting

HG Ponting's reputation as a landscape and portrait photographer - or "camera artist" as he preferred to be known - was already established when Robert Falcon Scott appointed him photographer to the doomed Terra Nova Antarctic expedition of 1910. But it is for his work from this commission that he is perhaps best known, with its sparkling images of towering ice formations and haunting shots of Scott and his fellow explorers before their tragic deaths. To coincide with the publication of The Photographs of HG Ponting (The Discovery Gallery, pounds 19.50), Wimbledon Library will be exhibiting 20 of Ponting's Antarctic prints alongside other work from his travels to Japan, China and India - the first time these exquisite photographs have been shown since Ponting's death in 1935.
