'45-'99 to 9 Jan Kettle's Yard, Cambridge

Kettle's Yard's last show of the millennium is a rather delightful and very personal selection of 31 works by British artists chosen by Bryan Robertson.

Robertson has been an influential figure in the British art world in the last 50 years and is best remembered for heading the Whitechapel Art gallery from 1952 to 1968. A good number of the artists in his selection, including Caro and Hepworth, were the subjects of important exhibitions there in the Sixties, but there are others, such as Fiona Rae and Gary Hume, who made their names in the last few years.

The work selected begins with a chalk drawing by Mary Kessell from 1944 and includes good things by Colquhoun, Craxton and Vaughan from the middle of the century, an early Howard Hodgkin (above) from the 1970s, and some later works, the most recent a painting from earlier this year by Jane Dixon.

It's an excellent survey of a particular sort of sensibility in British art in the last 50 years.
