SYDNEY now ranks at Ladbrokes as the favourite city to host the millennium Olympics, and several of Australia's leading architects are drawing up plans for new Olympic buildings as if the choice of Sydney were a foregone conclusion. The Olympic site is at Homebush, 8.5 miles west of the city centre; there are plans for 16 new sports-related buildings, including housing for 15,000 visitors. Meanwhile, Manchester (ranking third in the Ladbroke stakes) has asked a mix of British, US and Japanese architects to compete for the design of the main Olympic site at Eastlands; they include Sir Norman Foster, Sir Richard Rogers, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and Kenzo Tange.
