Architecture Update: Spanish links

TO coincide with this month's celebration of Spanish art, architecture and design, the Royal Academy's RA magazine has commissioned Santiago Calatrava, the Spanish architect and engineer, to design a footbridge across the Thames linking Bankside Power Station on the south side - one of the proposed sites for the Museum of Modern Art - with St Paul's Cathedral on the north bank. A model of the bridge reveals a design in striking contrast with the overt solidity of exisiting bridges across the Thames. An exhibition of Dr Calatrava's projects is on show at the Bruton Street Gallery, London W1, until 26 March. Models include his scheme for the 'greening' of St John the Divine Cathedral, New York, a modular station design for London Underground and a pedestrian bridge linking Salford with Manchester. Dr Calatrava will speak at the Royal Society of Arts on 22 March and the Arnolfini Gallery, Bristol, on 23 March.
