SANTIAGO CALATRAVA, the Spanish engineer and architect, is to design his first bridge, or rather footbridge, in Britain. It will span the River Irwell and link Manchester with Salford. The 41- year-old architect is not only one of Europe's most innovative architects but popular with the British public as well. When the Department of Transport rejected his east London river crossing, thousands signed a petition in protest. His exhibition at the Riba last year attracted a record number of visitors.
