Where are you now and what can you see?

I'm in my home in suburban Detroit. I can see the mess on my desk. Beyond that, I can see out the window to the oncoming winter in Michigan, bare trees, frozen ponds, and a cold wind blowing.

What are you currently reading?

I just finished City of Thieves by David Benioff. When I'm promoting a non-fiction book on tour, as I am now, I usually like to read fiction. When I'm promoting one of my novels, I usually read non-fiction: don't ask me why

Choose a favourite author; why do you like her/him?

Nick Hornby... his work is funny and dotted with memorable characters, but he also has a thread of goodness running underneath his stories. It gives his work a lasting resonance.

Describe the room where you usually write

For years I wrote in my basement. More recently I graduated to one floor above, an office with all my books and music and – ta da! – a window.

What distracts you from writing?

The rest of my life. Which is why I always write first thing in the morning when it's quiet and often dark... Also, any music with lyrics; I end up writing what the singer is singing.

Which fictional character most resembles you?

Oh, that's easy: Batman. No - I doubt I would make a very good central character for anyone's novel.

What are your readers like?

Amazingly kind, warm, open, and energetic... I seem to have very few casual readers, only passionate and appreciative ones... I am blessed.

Who is your hero/heroine from outside literature?

The elder members of my family... They endured and sacrificed in ways that I never will. Their spirit and wisdom made me who I am and their teachings permeate my work.
