Independence Day is toppled by A Time to Kill, the thriller adapted from John Grisham and starring Samuel L Jackson as a man who ends up on trial after taking revenge on the men who attacked his daughter. Sandra Bullock gets top billing, but the film is expected to make a star of Matthew McConaughey, who plays the green young defence lawyer.
