Damn Yankees

An old-fashioned, sock it to 'em show which has the goods, and boy, does it deliver. Jerry Lewis is having a ball as a wittily urbane devil, and when the team launch into "(You Gotta Have) Heart", who are we to disagree?

Adelphi Theatre, London (0171-344 0055)

The Cherry Orchard

Janet Suzman takes Chekhov's masterpiece and relocates it to contemporary South Africa to subtle but powerful effect in a co-production with the Market Theatre, Johannesburg. Closes tonight

Birmingham Rep (0121-236 4455)

Closer

Sex on the Internet doesn't come any funnier than in Patrick Marber's powerfully assured, razor-sharp comedy. Ignore the life and death symbolism and revel in the engrossing subtext. This is men behaving extremely badly. Not for the faint-hearted.

In rep, National Theatre, London SE1 (0171-928 2252)

A Midsummer Night's Dream

An invigorating production that lives up to the wonders of the verdant setting, with boisterous lovers, big laughs and a particularly mischievous Puck from John Padden.

Open Air Theatre, Regent's Park, London (0171-486 2431)

The Herbal Bed

Peter Whelan's love-story cum courtroom drama, based on the 17th-century sex scandal involving Shakespeare's daughter. Stephen Boxer is outstanding as a cleric with a dangerous lust for truth.

Duchess Theatre, London WC2 (0171-494 5075)

The Seagull

English Touring Theatre presents a new version of Chekhov's tragicomedy, with Cheryl Campbell as the self-obsessed actress Arkardina.

Tonight, Orchard Dartford (01322-220000) From Tue, Theatre Royal, Bury St Edmunds (01284 769505)

The Illusion

Corneille's play in a version by Tony "Angels in America" Kushner, directed by Matthew Lloyd for the Royal Exchange. A crack cast includes Ian Bartholomew and Helen Schlesinger, who made such an impression in The Road to Mecca at the same address.

Mobile Theatre, Manchester (0161-833 9833)
