Day Out

With my kind of job you want to get up early and do something active like go for a jog. I live in central Putney, London, so a brisk walk or run round Putney Heath might wake me up. On the other hand, I don't think I ever have gone for a jog, so I would probably sleep in and have a nice brunch with my wife. I wouldn't waste time having lunch, just head for the Merton Mill craft fair. It's not as daunting a journey as going up to the markets in Camden or Greenwich and it's a bit quainter. There's a pretty old mill house with some willow trees and you have a lovely feeling of water flowing by.

In the afternoon, I would have a game with the West End Softball League. They have a game once a week during the summer. Different shows having different sides. I haven't played for a few years - last time we were in Gunnersbury Park which for some reason reminded me of my hometown, Eastchester, New York.

In the evening I would go to the theatre or opera. It would be a bit of a busman's holiday, but I never really get to see anything else while I'm working. I would probably opt for Dead Funny at the Vaudeville, WC2 (071-836 9987), something with a bit of meat in it, or go and see something at the ENO or Royal Opera. I'd finish the day by going to Joe Allen's, Exeter St, London WC2 (071-836 0651). Although it's known as a place where you go to see other important people in the theatre, I wouldn't go for that reason. It has a nice atmosphere, the food is good and the truth is it reminds me of a restaurant in the New York theatre district called Charlie's, which I used to go to a lot in my youth after seeing shows on Broadway.
