Day Out
I would start the day with two very strong cups of coffee. I've tried to quit, but I'm addicted. I'd spend the morning catching up with things - phoning people back - and then go for some fresh air on Hampstead Heath with Sarah Jane, my wife-to-be.
I love going to Soho, my favourite area of London, to meet friends, wander round and grab something to eat. I spend time at The Pollo Bar, a cheap cafe place on Old Compton Street, London W1 (071-734 5917). I'd have a plate of pasta there for lunch. Then there's The French House (071-437 2799) and The Coach and Horses (071-240 0553), the usual Soho drinking places. I might spend the afternoon at the Everyman Cinema in Hampstead (071-435 1525), catching up on some old films.
If I've got more time I'll go to the races. I usually stick to racecourses near London like Sandown and Lingfield, not the big races - they get too packed. In the evening, the restaurants I go to include a south Indian restaurant called Vijays, Willesden Lane, NW6 (071-328 1087). The food is very good and the staff are wonderful. If I'm going out for serious meal I'd go to Nikita's, a brilliant Russian restaurant in Ifield Rd, SW10 (071-352 6326). They have different flavoured vodkas so by the time the food comes it's all a bit of a blur. They shut you off in these booths and you ring a bell for them to come and serve you. It's surprisingly rowdy. A place I went to quite a lot in the summer was Whirligig, a club in Shoreditch. It's not a usual club - it's closed by midnight, but there's a fantastic atmosphere, like a hippy festival. I've met a surprising number of actors there.
