Upcoming project will likely ignore film following T2

"I'll be back,” The Terminator told us time and time again. Did we listen? No. Numerous publications, including this very one, wrote about a New York Daily News’ article claiming the long-running series was over.

The news was no surprise: Paramount Pictures previously announced that the two planned Genisys sequels - the first of which should have reached cinemas this May - have been dropped.

However, speaking to Collider, Skydance Media founder David Ellison said the series will continue, with a major announcement coming later this year.

“I will say we have resolved the future of the franchise and believe me it's an incredibly bright future,” he told the publication. “I think where it’s going will be the continuation of what the fans really wanted since T2.”

“We have something this year that we will be announcing for the franchise. It’s something we’re incredibly excited about and we think is the direction it needs to head.”

Previously, reports detailed how James Cameron will retain certain rights to The Terminator in 2019, the director hoping to bring the series to a rightful conclusion.

At the time, Ellison - who co-financed Genisys - was said to be bankrolling the upcoming exploratory effort which could see Deadpool’s Tim Miller act as director.
