Carol is a primary-school teacher living in St Andrew's. David is a scaly- tub gurnard who lives in the flatfish tank at the local Sea Life Centre. They fall in love, and Carol's friend Elaine sells the story to the press. On paper, girl-meets-fish is not the most promising of plots, but from this cheesy idea Lynn Ferguson has spun 45 minutes of wry and touching drama, teasing away at the question "Can you love someone and not be like them?". Ferguson is a stand-up by trade. She proves here, though, that she's also a fine actress, playing three roles and undercutting essentially comic lines like "When he doesn't phone me, I know it's because he can't" with a profoundly stoical sadness.
