Sir: One of the more persistent questions which will face the new Director-General of the BBC is: "Why should we have a publicly funded broadcasting corporation at all? Why not just leave the media to market forces?" The usual answer is to talk in general terms about "quality". However, a more cogent answer might be that in the information market, the customer is not always right; if he were, he wouldn't need any information.
