Sir: Of course, we don't break free from the gravity of Earth when we travel to the Moon (letter, 21 July). Perhaps I should have been less scathing with my friend in Beirut, where I was living at the time of the Moon landing (the Arab world was never greatly impressed by the USA's great leap for mankind) when he remarked that it was surely not much of a problem for the astronauts to return from the Moon, as it was downhill all the way.
