Sir: Miles Kington's article "The amazing truth about the United States of America" (3 September) didn't quite get to the truth. The most westerly part of Hawaii is Niihau Island, lying between 160 and 161 degrees west. Several islands of the Aleutian chain lie between this and the 180th parallel, the most westerly being Amatignak Island, slightly west of 179 degrees. This means that Alaska contains the most northerly, westerly and easterly points of the US. Hawaii is merely the most southerly. Even more amazing than the article suggested.
