THE INSTALLATION

Monteverdi and modernism curiously affecting. The Financial Times thought the score "very attractive", but asked "Why has he composed a lengthy Monteverdian pastiche?" The Daily Telegraph found no sign of "a full-blooded, dramatically integrated opera in which emotions make an impact." The Times disagreed. "Rare musical and theatrical enchantment."

In repertory at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. Booking: 0171-304 4000

Another fine performance by rising mezzo-soprano Susan Graham, but be warned: it runs for two-and-a-quarter hours with no interval.
