Sir: The meeting between Alex Salmond, the Scottish National Party leader, and Prince Charles (report, 12 October) raised the question of links after devolution. On issues like opposition to nuclear weapons and arms sales to regimes with an appalling record on human rights, the SNP has far more in common with the 1992 Labour candidate Bruce Kent than with George Robertson or Gordon Brown. Given Millbank's tendency to exercise greater control on Labour candidates, progressive opinion south of the border will look to the Scottish Parliament for a radical lead on global issues. Independence could strengthen, not weaken, social ties.
