It was probably the relaxation of spending an "away" weekend in a riverside hotel that, having bought The Independent, it took me until 3.30 in the afternoon before the wicket fell ("His year of Grace", 1 April).

Underarm bowling indeed! Hands on the hoe and bat, running "back and forth". I almost expected to learn that Vincent played in the first test!
