Sir: In his excellent report "Gay murder incites fear and fury" (17 october), Andrew Gumbel insists that Laramie, although liberal, is not tolerant. Homosexuals, he says, suffer discrimination in housing and employment and cannot hold hands in public. It is worth remembering that exactly the same applies in Britain. It is perfectly legal in the UK to sack someone for being gay; tenancy rights are not available to gay couples; holding hands in public is "conduct likely to cause a breach of the peace". Perhaps we British are no more tolerant than the people of Wyoming.
