Sir: One of the most intransigent problems faced by schools has been the departure of good teachers from the classroom into the ranks of administrators to improve their pay. Fay Langley, 22, was quoted by Judith Judd ("Fast- track teachers", 24 September) as saying: "I want to get on quickly in my career and become a head." Most heads these days are increasingly regarded as middle management and are becoming remote from staff, never mind pupils.
