The Red Desert

Antonioni's amorphous 1964 study of a woman lost in life is screened here with Todd Haynes's Safe, which shares its sense of disorientation and alienation. These films forbid passive viewing - there's a lot of work to do, but with great rewards.

Sun 1.30pm, Rio Cinema, London E8 (0171-254 6677)

Les Apprentis

Guillaume Depardieu, Gerard's boy, sparkles in this gentle, good-natured comedy about two unemployed loafers trying to maintain dignity on the breadline.
