It's not the performances of Susan Sarandon and Sean Penn that surprise so much in this death-row drama (though they are both excellent), but the boundless sensitivity of the writer-director Tim Robbins. He doesn't do things the easy way: his film leaves you mute, appalled, brimming with questions. And, finally, reeling.
