A year ago it looked like Robbie Williams (left) had blown it. His debut album wasn't selling in Take That proportions, and the smart money was saying that Gary Barlow was the one set for a successful solo career. It even looked like Mark Owen might eclipse him. But there's no disputing that "Angels" is a classic single, and that his performance at last year's Glastonbury deserved the massive critical applause. From there he's just rolled on and on, yet Williams still seems unsure whether he wants to be the sixth member of Oasis or pump out ersatz pop in an All Saints vein - which all helps to explain his widespread appeal.
