Preview: Theatre Macbeth

Loose Ends on Radio 4 last week contained a sketch by the Nimmo Twins in which they talked through Macbeth in the style of a football match post-mortem. It may sound ridiculous, but looking at the play in strategic terms makes a lot of sense: you could say that, in the hurly- burly of the action, the Thane of Glamis does a Gazza, and lets his emotions get the better of him. Any production has to detail the ebb and flow of self-possession with freeze-frame accuracy. For her no-frills revival, the producer Thelma Holt has assembled a good team: Rufus Sewell (left) and Sally Dexter play the childless, grasping Macbeths. John Crowley directs. But the result is by no means a foregone conclusion.
