The success of Farewell My Concubine confirms China as the source of the most exciting and important cinema today. And next month sees another fine example, Tian Zhuangzhuang's The Blue Kite.

Highly praised at Cannes, The Blue Kite returns to Chinese history - but in contrast to Concubine's big, epic sweep, this is an intimate story of a small boy and his family. Moving, funny and as beautifully shot as we now expect of Chinese films, The Blue Kite takes a frank view of Party corruption and is banned on its home turf.
