"Sorry about the delay, I was just getting a goat out of a van," explains Colin Johnson. It's all go at the Freightliners City Farm in Islington, North London as Johnson, the manager, prepares for the London Sheep and Wool Fair this weekend, a fitting showcase for the work of a dozen City Farms and an ideal way to get closer to nature without spending hours bumper to bumper on the M25. As well as woolly quadrapeds, the show also promises sheep dogs of the world, reptiles and llamas - which are apparently used increasingly on large sheep farms to ward off foxes - together with a range of country pursuits such as shearing, spinning and dyeing. The Crouch End All Stars and the Stiff Pilchards will provide musical accompaniment. A diverse range of animal welfare groups will also be in attendance, including SNIP, the Society for the Neutering of Islington Pussies. "But I don't know whether or not they're operating on the day," Johnson says.
