Sound films
Currently making loud noises at the NFT is Celluloid Jukebox - a collection of movies whose soundtracks are integral to their success. At its best, music melds so closely with visuals that the two are hard to distinguish. Would Ridley Scott's seminal Blade Runner (6.20pm 9 May) be as good without Vangelis's brooding synthesisers (it was certainly better without the studio's plonking voiceovers), and can you think of Sam Peckinpah's Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid (6.30pm 17 May) without starting to hum Big Bob's "Knocking on Heaven's Door"? The power of The Who's rock operatics almost - almost - makes you forget to laugh at the flying scooter in Quadrophenia (8.20pm 31 May). Also showing: George Hamilton as Hank Williams (left) in Your Cheating Heart (6.10pm 24 May), and the amazing Jamaican crime caper The Harder They Come with Jimmy Cliff (above) in June. In fact, from Sid and Nancy to True Stories, there's scarcely a dull moment.
Celluloid Jukebox runs to July at NFT, South Bank (0171-928 3232 for full programme)
