The Independent Recommends: Classical
THAT FINE period-instrument outfit The Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment strikes at the very heart of the Enlightenment itself tonight with a programme which compares and contrasts Mozart's two greatest mass settings: the Mass in C (Coronation), and the Mass in C minor (Great). Separated by just four years, these works date from the end of his Salzburg period and the beginning of his Vienna sojourn respectively. With a line- up of vocal soloists and under the baton of Andrew Davis, this should be a concert to remember for some time to come.

Punch and Judy, the seminal chamber opera by Sir Harrison Birtwistle (below), became a cause celebre when it first burst on to the scene 30 years ago. At the Aldeburgh premiere, Benjamin Britten and Peter Pears apparently walked out long before the end. By turns violent, lyrical, impassioned and anarchic, Punch and Judy is however a true modern classic. This new touring production by Music Theatre Wales does it proud, with energetic singing and the MTW ensemble adding masterly accompaniment.
