Beverley Early Music Festival (0482- 867430, from Thurs). Highlight: Purcell's Fairy Queen in Beverley Minster.

Ensemble Intercontemporain (South Bank, 071-928 8800, Fri & Sat). A miniature residency by the elite corps of the avant-garde in France, which brings with it the new piano concerto by the exiled Harry Birtwistle. Pierre Boulez conducts.

Brighton Festival (0273-674357, from Fri). Opening with unknown violinist David Garrett in Schumann's Violin Concerto. Risky.
