Million Pound Drop: Channel 4 drops primetime quiz show

The show is said to be ending its six-year run in a bid to save money

After six years on the air, Channel 4 has decided to bring its high-stakes quiz show The Million Pound Drop to a close.

The move comes in a reported bid to save money.

According to The Sun, an insider has claimed that "there are no plans currently to bring back The Million Pound Drop."

"People say it's a shame as it had a big following."

The insider's not wrong; when it first aired in May 2010, the primetime quiz show hosted by Davina McCall regularly hauled in an impressive 11 million viewers.

A spokesperson for the show has since suggested to Metro that the series was merely on hiatus, stating that "it could come back at some stage."

The tense quiz show saw contestants start off with a million pounds before hedging the entirety of the fund they'd been handed on an ensuing eight questions. If completing each round with a prize fund intact, the contestants would continue until all eight questions were answered.

The highest ever total won was by comedian Jack Whitehall and his father on a celebrity edition of the show which saw the two raise £300,000 for charity.
