Beaver releases to be allowed into English wild in major Government move
Beavers designated as native species in England
The Government has approved the release of beavers into the English wild to combat flooding and restore nature, for the first time in centuries.
Beavers, known as “ecosystem engineers”, create dams and ponds that enhance wildlife habitats, reduce flood risks, and store water during droughts.
Concerns exist among farmers about potential flooding of roads, properties, and farmland, prompting calls for managed control, including lethal measures if necessary.
The Government says beaver releases will be carefully managed to minimise impacts on food production and infrastructure, with a 10-year plan in place for each project.
Existing wild beaver populations in areas like Cornwall, Devon, and Kent will be allowed to remain and expand naturally, with the first new release expected in Purbeck Heaths.
