New AI feature driving ‘biblical’ demand for ChatGPT

ChatGPT gained one million users in an hour following the release of its new free AI image generation feature, part of GPT-4o.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman described the demand as “biblical”, contrasting it with the platform's initial launch, which saw it take five days to reach one million users.
The new feature allows users to create detailed images, logos, and diagrams, leveraging GPT-4o's knowledge base and chat context.
Its popularity, particularly for generating Studio Ghibli-style images, led to temporary usage limits due to high demand overwhelming OpenAI's systems.
OpenAI boasts 500 million ChatGPT users since its November 2022 launch and is valued at US$300 billion (£232 billion).
