Pope Francis celebrates Mass at the Santa Marta chapel at the Vatican, Friday, Feb. 16, 2018
Following the death of Pope Francis, the Vatican will convene a papal conclave to elect his successor.
Cardinals under 80 will participate in a secret ballot until a candidate receives a two-thirds majority.
Potential successors include Cardinal Pietro Parolin (Vatican Secretary of State), Cardinal Peter Erdö (known for conservative views), Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle (who would be the first Asian Pope), Cardinal Matteo Zuppi (considered a favorite of Pope Francis), and Cardinal Raymond Leo Burke (a traditionalist).
The conclave process typically lasts 15-20 days.
Pope Francis's declining health and recent hospitalization prompted discussions about his succession before his death.
