About 80,000 travellers stranded after Spain-Portugal blackout

  • A widespread power outage in Spain and Portugal has caused approximately 500 flight cancellations, affecting an estimated 80,000 passengers.
  • Lisbon’s airport was the most impacted, with 45 per cent of departures cancelled, followed by Seville with one-third of its departing flights grounded.
  • Around 4,000 passengers traveling to or from the UK experienced cancellations, primarily on routes to and from Lisbon, Faro, and Malaga.
  • Several airlines have offered passengers the option to rebook on later flights, but not all airlines are providing this flexibility.
  • An estimated 500,000 tourists are currently in Spain, and 70,000 UK holidaymakers are in Portugal.
