300,000 homes face loss of power in meter change-up
Households across the UK are being warned they may experience complete meter failure if they don’t upgrade their meters
Around 300,000 UK homes risk losing hot water and heating if they don't replace their outdated Radio Teleswitch Service (RTS) system by July 1, 2025.
The RTS system, used to control heating and hot water, is being switched off this summer, and households are urged to upgrade to smart meters.
While around 1,000 smart meters are being installed daily, concerns remain about the slow pace of replacements, especially for vulnerable households and those in rural areas.
Without the upgrade, customers may lose access to cheaper tariffs, face inaccurate billing, or experience complete meter failure.
Government and energy companies are under pressure to accelerate the transition and ensure a smooth switch-off process for consumers.
