Bites: Bully for you, Ferran!
The S.Pellegrino World's 50 Best Restaurants 2008, as judged by food writers, critics, publishers and commentators, are announced tomorrow evening, and I'm going to stick my neck out and say there'll be no change at the top for the third year in a row. That means the number one spot once again for Spain and Ferran Adrià (pictured) for El Bulli, and the runner-up spot going to the UK and Heston Blumenthal's The Fat Duck. Now, there's a chance that I could end up with bacon and egg ice-cream all over my face here – but somehow I doubt it.
Meanwhile, lovers of London's dining heritage will be hoping the sale of the lease on the building that houses the 142-year-old Café Royal, to Israeli hotel group Alrov, will mean its historic Grill room will be fully restored. The rococo Grade I-listed dining-room, where Oscar Wilde once held court, has been used as a cocktail bar and event space since 2005. Perhaps plans to turn the building into a luxury hotel will give it back its greater purpose.
