Robin Williams set to be honoured with avatar in Nintendo’s new Zelda game

Nintendo could be set to honour the late Robin Williams by naming a new character after him in its next instalment of the game The Legend Of Zelda.

A spokesperson for the Japanese games giant said that while "nothing has been decided", it "won’t rule out a request" to pay tribute to the actor, after more than 100,000 fans signed a petition for it.

Williams was himself an avid gamer, appeared in numerous Nintendo adverts and even named his daughter, Zelda Rae, after the series’ eponymous heroine.

The US branch of Nintendo released a statement following the death of the actor, 63, last week.

"Robin Williams was loved at Nintendo," it read.

"We appreciate the outpouring of support from the gaming community, and hear the request of fans to honour him in a future game.

"We will not be discussing what might be possible for future games during this difficult time, but we will hold our memories of Robin close."

The news comes after the developers behind The World of Warcraft revealed plans to pay tribute to Williams.

Creators Blizzard responded to a similar petition calling for the actor to be added as a non-playable character by tweeting the following message:

Williams was found dead in his home in California after he took his own life.

He had been suffering from severe depression, his publicist later confirmed, following a life-long battle to maintain his sobriety. He had also been diagnosed with the early stages of Parkinson’s disease.
