White: 1999 Casa Leona Chardonnay, £4.49, Marks & Spencer

This M&S favourite is one of the best dry whites in its under-a-fiver line-up. Its ripe, exotic, pineappley fruit has a crisp, grapefruity edge to it, which makes this Chilean wine ideal summer sipping, on its own or with white fish in a creamy sauce.

Red: 1998 L'Enclos des Cigales Syrah, Vin de Pays d'Oc, £3.49, Safeway

This robust, spicy, southern French syrah is down 50p to £3.49 for the duration of the Safeway May wine extravaganza, making it something of a bargain. Try with a strong and spicy pasta sauce such as puttanesca.
