White 1994 J J Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spätlese, £13.99, Waitrose Wine Direct (0800 188881). This mosel riesling classic is still incredibly young with sumptuous, intense lemon and grapefruit flavours delicately poised between sweet and sour fruit and cleansing acidity. Makes a majestic pre-prandial apéritif or try it with a warm potato and tomato salad drizzled with a basil vinaigrette.

Red 1998 Russian River Estate Zinfandel, £12.99, selected Sainsbury's. Ex-fireman Cecil de Loach taps into gnarled old zinfandel vines in California's Sonoma Valley to produce deliciously fruity reds like this moreish example of the variety, with its brambly, berry-like qualities enhanced by an added oak spiciness that chimes well with spicily seasoned food.
