Wines of the week
White: 1999 Tenuta Le Velette Orvieto Classico Superiore Secco, £4.99, Oddbins One of a trio of fine Umbrian estate whites, this, the more inexpensive dry version, is rich in peachy, ripe fruit with an incisively tropical, grapefruity flourish giving it a deliciously crisp aftertaste. The perfect pre-prandial dry white.

Red: 1999 Crozes Hermitage, Etienne Barret, Domaine Pochon, £6.99, Safeway Good to see this very fine, classic example of the syrah grape from Domaine Pochon back at Safeway. With a raspberryish, pure juicy fruitiness and tinged with cracked pepper, it's everything a good Crozes Hermitage should be.
