White: Albert Etienne Brut Champagne, £8.99, Safeway

White: Albert Etienne Brut Champagne, £8.99, Safeway

As Sainsbury's gears up for the festivities with a 20 per cent cut on its champagnes, Safeway is fighting back with a one-off special offer of £5 off its own champagne brand, Albert Etienne. It's reduced from the normal £13.99, but just until next Tuesday. At this price, this apéritif-style, lightly toasty, finely balanced fizz is a steal.

Red: 1998 Château Planÿze Cÿtes du Roussillon Villages, £6.99, Marks & Spencer

One of a new range of southern French wines in at Marks, this robust red from the Pyrenean foothills is made of more than two-thirds syrah, which adds a fruitcakey spiciness to the gutsy flavours of the more traditional carignan and grenache. A suitable autumn warmer for a tasty pheasant chasseur or rabbit casserole.
