London's infamous Scala cinema is set to re-open its doors. The much-loved art-house fleapit played host to cult movie marathons complete with requisite faded glamour until it was shut down back in 1993 owing to financial problems caused by, among other things, an illicit screening of Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange, which the celebrated director had withdrawn from British release. Now, with the director barely cold in his coffin, the cinema plans to show the film again.

Perhaps Stanley will be there in spirit for the grand re-opening under the assured hand of club promoter Sean McLusky, who's spent four years plotting its resurrection. Although original features have been restored, the interior has been transformed by architects FAT to accommodate McLusky's vision of a "continually changing space" inspired by, of all things, an episode of Seventies spy series The New Avengers. In other words it's a warren of extra-curricular action in the shape of bars, cafes, live music, club nights and film festivals - and not before time, too. AM
