As the world now knows, when David Benson was a nipper he won a Jackanory competition and had a story read on TV by Kenneth Williams. It was the start of a fateful and fruitful (in every sense) connection with the late, great wit, warbler and Will o' the Wisp voiceover. Benson's unbridled success at the 1996 Edinburgh Festival led to a national tour for this most exemplary of solo shows, a triumphant return to Edinburgh in 1997, two Christmas seasons on the London fringe and at last, a two-week West End transfer. You don't get that far on a good impersonation alone, although his uncanny capturing of the voice alone was enough to to captivate Maggie Smith.
