When you hear "European Shanty Town", the summer anthem-in-waiting from Kubryk Townsend, you're hard pushed to work out where you are in the world: there's a hint of Indian flute here, a shimmering alto-sax there, and underneath it all a pulsing mbira dance rhythm. It's not surprising you're lost: at the age of 16, Kubryk Townsend left for Paris and began working as a musician in cafes and on the street. He played all over Europe for nine years before returning to quaff London's eclectic musical styles - from Otis Grand's blues to Spirit Level's modern jazz, and South Africa's Mervin Affrika. Currently on a UK tour (details: www.theshed.co.uk), Kubryk is joined tonight by longstanding rhythm section partner, Andrea Trillo on drums, Ghanaian-born Chris Lamptey on guitar and Dave Blackmore on sax and bass clarinet to play an intoxicating mixture of world jazz and original compositions, laced with Kubryk's spoken word and songs. Close your eyes and head on out. Dominic Cavendish
