Britten's opera Paul Bunyan was originally written for American high-schoolers. Bunyan, a figure out of American folklore, was said to have grown as tall as the Empire State Building. Try not to miss Jan Garbarek and the Hilliard Ensemble in their only British performance together. Garbarek, the jazz saxophonist, and the medieval vocal group teamed up last year to produce Officium, an album of 15th and 16th-century choral music featuring Garbarek's improvisations. The Edinburgh International Christmas Market kicks off tonight. It includes two ceilidh nights (tonight and 12 December). There will be more than 40 covered stalls, and each day the market will highlight the cuisine, products and customs of a different country. For more holiday cheer, The York Early Music Christmas Festival starts tomorrow. Highlights include a programme of Christmas music from renaissance Germany, Bach's Christmas Oratorio and Schutz's Christmas Story.
