Juicy Argentinian malbec. Full of plum and cherry fruit with a substantial veneer of spicy oak, making for an everyday red that tastes considerably more expensive than it is.

Under a tenner: 2003 Annie's Lane Clare Valley Riesling, £7.49, Oddbins

A refreshing, aromatic Australian dry white. Classic lime-zesty characters of riesling enhanced by the smoky, keroseney undertones the grape can develop. At 11.5 per cent alcohol, it's the perfect foil for Chinese and delicately spiced Thai food.

Splash out: 2002 Perrin Vacqueyras, Les Christins, £10.03, Tesco

Spicy, headily scented and rich, this fine Rhône village grenache and syrah blend doesn't quite have the depth of the amazing 2001, but it's still a robust, characterful and peppery red. An asset to any lingering summery lunch.
