From student to pro: how are they doing one year on?: Six Smith and Add-Ject Design have both got off the ground

WHAT happens to all those hundreds of students who pour out of Britain's design colleges every summer? You can find out in 'One Year On', running concurrently with 'The New Designers' show.

It is difficult not to be impressed at the standard of smithery and the imagination expressed in the furniture and accessories of Six Smith, a group of seven (it was six) ex-Camberwell School of Art metalworkers now based under a railway arch in Battersea, south London. The shape of the steel table (right) designed by Stephen Edwards, one of the Six (or seven), was 'conjured up in a dream'. Dream or not, the table is beautifully resolved, the red-steel knots tying the legs to the heavy top. A durable design and good value at pounds 350. Six Smith can be contacted on 071-498 2977.

Paul Fryer and Adrian Thompson, graduates in

3D Design from Buckinghamshire College, High Wycombe, have set up Add-Ject Design (0494 459849). They make one-off pieces of furniture, but have got off the ground by designing what Fryer calls 'cheap and cheerful' sidelines: their wiry, spindly candlesticks, clocks and mirrors (left) sell at around pounds 15 each. These lighthearted, lightweight accessories are bound to find their way into the shops soon.
